How to Layer Micellar Water, Serum, Face Cream and Facial Oil

A skincare routine does not need ten different steps to feel complete.

For most people, a simple routine built around cleansing, serum, moisturiser and facial oil is more than enough. The main thing is using each product in the right order so that lighter products can absorb before richer products are applied.

The basic order is:

Micellar water → facial serum → face cream → facial oil

This applies particularly well to dry, sensitive and changing skin, where consistency and comfort are often more useful than adding more products.

Step 1: Cleanse with micellar water

Micellar water is the first step because it removes makeup, daily build-up and surface impurities before leave-on skincare is applied.

Apply it to a cotton or reusable pad and gently sweep it across the face and neck. Avoid rubbing or repeatedly passing over the same area.

Some micellar waters are designed to be used without rinsing. Follow the directions provided with the particular product you use.

In the evening, take a little more time around areas where sunscreen, makeup or heavier products have been applied.

The aim is not to make the skin feel stripped or tight. It is simply to leave a clean surface for the next step.

Step 2: Apply facial serum

Serum comes after cleansing because it normally has a lighter texture than cream or oil.

Apply a few drops to clean skin and gently smooth or press the serum over the face and neck. Allow it to absorb before moving to the next step.

You do not need to use several serums at once. Choose one that suits the focus of your routine.

For example:

  • Niacinamide can fit into a straightforward daily routine.
  • Hyaluronic acid is commonly chosen when the skin feels dry or lacking in comfort.
  • Vitamin C is often used as part of a brighter-looking morning routine.
  • Retinol and salicylic acid are generally better introduced slowly and used with additional care.

Using more serum does not necessarily improve the result. A small, even amount is usually enough.

Step 3: Apply face cream

Face cream follows serum because it is richer and helps provide a moisturising layer over the skin.

Use a small amount and gently smooth it over the face and neck. Pay attention to areas that feel particularly dry, but avoid applying a thick layer simply because the skin feels unsettled.

During the morning, face cream can be followed by sunscreen.

During the evening, it may be the final step, or it can be followed by facial oil when additional richness is wanted.

A face cream and facial oil do not perform exactly the same role. Cream usually combines water and oil-based ingredients, while facial oil provides an oil-based final layer.

Step 4: Finish with facial oil

Facial oil is usually applied last because oil-based products can slow the movement of lighter water-based products into the skin.

Warm two to four drops between the fingertips and gently press or massage the oil over the face and neck.

There is no need to heavily coat the skin. Start with a small amount and add another drop only when needed.

Facial oil can be used:

  • after face cream
  • instead of face cream when the routine needs to feel simpler
  • only in the evening
  • on dry areas rather than the entire face

The best approach depends on how your skin feels and how rich you prefer the final step to be.

Morning routine

A simple morning routine could be:

  1. Micellar Cleansing Water
  2. Facial serum
  3. Face cream
  4. Sunscreen

Facial oil can also be used in the morning, but keep the amount light and allow it to settle before applying sunscreen or makeup.

Sunscreen should remain the final skincare step during the day.

Evening routine

A simple evening routine could be:

  1. Micellar Cleansing Water
  2. Facial serum
  3. Face cream
  4. Facial oil

You do not have to use every step every evening.

Some evenings may only require cleansing and face cream. On others, a serum and facial oil may feel more appropriate. A routine should remain practical enough to follow consistently.

How long should you wait between each step?

You do not need to wait several minutes between every product.

Usually, it is enough to let each layer settle before applying the next. This may take around 30 seconds to a minute, depending on the texture.

When products begin rolling or pilling on the skin, too much may have been applied or the layers may not have had enough time to settle.

Use smaller amounts and avoid repeatedly rubbing the skin.

Can face cream and facial oil be mixed together?

They can be mixed, although layering them separately gives you more control over the amount of each product.

To mix them, place a small amount of face cream in the palm, add one drop of facial oil and blend them together before applying.

This can be useful when:

  • the cream alone does not feel rich enough
  • the oil alone feels too heavy
  • you want a quicker evening routine

Mix only the amount needed for one application rather than combining products inside their containers.

Common layering mistakes

Applying facial oil before serum

Oil may make it harder for a water-based serum to spread and settle evenly. Use serum first and oil last.

Using too much product

Thicker layers do not automatically provide better care. Excess product can feel sticky, greasy or begin to pill.

Introducing several active serums at once

Using retinol, salicylic acid and other active products together may make it difficult to understand what your skin tolerates.

Introduce one product at a time and follow its specific directions.

Changing the routine too frequently

It is difficult to judge how a product fits when the entire routine changes every few days.

Keep the basic structure stable and make changes gradually.

Ignoring daytime sun protection

Retinol, exfoliating acids and some skincare routines can make careful daytime sun protection especially important.

Use a suitable broad-spectrum sunscreen and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

A simple routine for dry and changing skin

A practical routine might include:

Morning

  • Micellar Cleansing Water
  • Niacinamide or Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum
  • Restorative Face Cream
  • Sunscreen

Evening

  • Micellar Cleansing Water
  • Facial serum
  • Restorative Face Cream
  • Radiant Skin Facial Oil

The aim is not to create the longest possible routine. It is to use a small number of products in a clear order and adjust the amount according to how the skin feels.

The Simple Routine brings these stages together in one complete set.

Final order to remember

When you are unsure, move from the lightest texture to the richest:

Cleanse → serum → cream → oil

This gives each product a clear place and keeps the routine easy to understand.

Patch test new products before first use. Introduce retinol and exfoliating acids gradually, and avoid combining active products unless you know they are suitable for use together.
